Alice Paul was an outspoken leader for the women’s suffrage
movement. She was born in Moorestown, New Jersey in 1885 and died in her
hometown of Moorestown, New Jersey in 1977. Alice’s goal was to get women the
right to vote. She organized parades of more than “5,000 participants from
every state in the union.” She also got a group of women to protest in front of
the white house, they were called “Silent Sentinels.”
Some signs said stuff like “Mr. President what will you do for woman
suffrage?” Some of the women were
harassed, then arrested, but most of the time both. Alice
was the first women to start the hunger strike. She was also force-fed through
tubes. In the end of 1917, Wilson said he supports women the right to vote,
which made the Nineteenth Amendment. It was passed in 1920. After it was passed,
Alice worked around the world for women to have equal rights; she earned a law
degree at the age of 37. Alice Paul influenced all the women in the 1900’s to
fight for their rights, so the women in the future didn’t have to go through the
force feedings and beatings again. She also influenced important people like
Woodrow Wilson to follow in her foot steps and fight for the rights and be
independent.

“I practiced a hunger strike until November
11th. After that date
they fed me twice a day by force, except on one day when I was too ill to be
touched. I have no complaints against the Holloway officials. I spent the whole
time in bed, because I refused to wear prison clothes.”
